Ducks Reassign G John Gibson to Admirals

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, announced today that they have reassigned goaltender John Gibson to the Admirals from the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Gibson, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound goaltender, appeared in 27 games with Kitchener this season, posting a 17-9-1 record with a 2.41 goals-against average (GAA), .928 save percentage (SV%) and one shutout with his junior team. He also went 5-5 with a 2.17 GAA and .946 SV% and one shutout in ten OHL playoff games with the Rangers.

Gibson led Team USA to a Gold Medal at the 2013 World Junior Championships (U20), posting a 5-2 record with a 1.36 GAA and .955 SV% in seven games. He led the tournament in wins, GAA, SV% and saves (193). Gibson's .955 SV% set a new Team USA record (in the World Juniors), going back to the inception of the tournament in 1977. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, becoming the first United States goaltender and second American overall to win the award after Zach Parise in 2004 (the MVP award was established in 2004). He was also named by the IIHF Directorate as the Best Goaltender at the tournament (sixth American to win the award) and was selected to the Media All-Star Team.

Last season, Gibson went 21-10-0 with a 2.75 GAA, .928 SV% and one shutout in 32 games with Kitchener. He led the OHL in save percentage and ranked sixth in goals-against average. In two seasons with the Rangers, Gibson has recorded a 38-19-1 record, while posting a 2.60 GAA, .928 SV% and two shutouts in 59 games. He has also gone 13-12 in 26 playoff games, with a 2.47 GAA, .941 SV% and two shutouts.

A 19-year-old native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Gibson's experience representing Team USA extends beyond this year's World Junior Championship. He helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 2011 Under-18 World Junior Championships where he was named the top goaltender of the tournament with a 2.34 GAA and .926 SV%. He also won gold at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 1.33 GAA and a .957 SV%. Gibson appeared in 32 contests with the United States National Team's (USNTDP) Under-18 club in 2010-11, posting a 2.64 GAA and .918 SV%.

The Anaheim Ducks selected Gibson in the second round (39th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
