Newark Bears News Release

Newark, NJ –Wednesday, June 12, 2002 – A four run eighth inning by the Long Island Ducks was enough to propel them to a 7-6 win over the Newark Bears and halt their three game winning streak. Rick Greene who worked the final two innings for Newark absorbed the loss and dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Newark took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a RBI double by Paul Esposito. A fielder's choice by PJ Williams in the top of the third tied the game up at 1-1, before Long Island went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fourth on a Francisco Morales single to left center.

Behind on the scoreboard, Newark answered back with four runs in their half of the fourth on an RBI single by Marcus Knight and a three run homerun by Justin Hall. Patrick Lennon homered for the Ducks in the sixth to make it just a 5-3 game. A poor defensive seventh inning for the Ducks allowed another Bear run to cross the plate as the Ducks committed three errors in the field.

Trailing 6-3 in the eighth the Ducks put across four runs on just three hits with the help of an error by Edgar Tovar to pull ahead 7-6. Jack Armstrong who started for Newark pitched seven innings while only allowing three runs on seven hits and Duck starter Jason Ryan went six full allowing all six runs, only five earned, on eight hits, but neither starter would factor in the decision. Long Island reliever Matt Snyder (1-1) got the win and Steve Falteisek (2) earned the save.
