Columbus Riverdragons News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga., December 20 â The Columbus Riverdragons are teaming up with Mission Columbus to assist those in need during the holiday season by hosting a food drive at their next home game scheduled for this Thursday, December 23 versus the Asheville Altitude at the Columbus Civic Center at 7:00 p.m..
Dragons fans who bring a canned good to the Civic Center box office prior to this Thursday's game will receive $3 off a regular priced ticket. All food items must be non-perishable and there is no limit on the amount of goods that can be donated.
"It is a privilege for us to team-up with the Columbus Baptist Association and to serve as a conduit of help for those in need," said Riverdragons Team President J. Barry McMullin. "We encourage our fans to see the need to deliver and to exemplify the gift of giving during the Holiday Season."
Mission Columbus, now in its second year of existence, was created in August of 2003 as a ministry of the Columbus Baptist Association, which represents 51 Southern Baptist churches in the greater Columbus area. From five food distribution sites in the Chattahoochee Valley, Mission Columbus provides over 1,100 families more than 22,000 pounds of food each month.
"During this time of year people are always giving....but I am so thankful for the Riverdragons giving such a great effort in providing this opportunity to their supporters to give food to Mission Columbus as we attempt to feed those in need around our community," said Rev. Jimmy Blanton, Associational Missionary for the Columbus Baptist Association. "Without the help of our community and organizations like the Riverdragons, this would be impossible to do."
The first place Riverdragons enter Thursday's game versus Asheville with an 8-1 record, which is the best start in NBDL history after nine games. Columbus will put its team record six-game winning streak on the line against an Altitude club that enters the contest with a four-game win streak. Asheville (8-4) is currently in second place in the NBDL and trails the Dragons by one and a half games in the league standings.
Thursday's game will also feature Night #3 of the Budweiser Concert Series, with a live halftime and post-game concert performance from Joey Allcorn and the Hillbilly Band. It will also be another Thirsty Thursday, with all beers just $2.25 at the Columbus Civic Center.
