Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - A two-out, two-run error in the 10th inning Saturday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium was the difference in a 6-4 Dayton Dragons win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Dayton grabbed a 1-0 lead in this three-game series after the 10-inning triumph.

The Kernels (16-13, 52-46) scored first in Saturday's contest, taking a 1-0 edge in the first inning. Casey Scoggins drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third base on a single from Nelson Molina. Luis Arraez followed with a groundout to score Scoggins.

Dayton (11-17, 32-66) answered with a go-ahead rally in the top of the third. Nick Senzel hit an RBI single that was coupled with an error, allowing both Shane Mardirosian and Zack Shields to score and put the Dragons in front. Two batters later, Chris Okey singled and drove in Senzel for a 3-1 Dayton advantage.

During the sixth inning, Cedar Rapids rallied to retake the lead, 4-3. A bases-loaded walk by J.J. Fernandez pushed in Arraez to open the scoring. Kevin Garcia grounded into an RBI force out that helped Jaylin Davis come home. Pinch-hitter Sean Miller batted next and delivered a go-ahead double that drove in Chris Ibarra.

Senzel came through again for Dayton by producing a game-tying sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Batting with one out and the bases loaded, Senzel flied out and brought in Luis Gonzalez to tie the contest at 4-4.

The game remain tied until the top of the 10th. A two-out intentional walk - the first by the Kernels this season - filled the bases for pinch-hitter Brantley Bell. He hit a ground ball that almost led to an inning-ending force out, but an error gave both Shed Long and Senzel an opportunity to score and give Dayton a 6-4 lead. The Kernels were retired in order in the bottom of the 10th to finish the contest.

Dayton's Ryan Hendrix (1-0) picked up the win after two scoreless innings of relief before Sarkis Ohanian tossed a perfect 10th inning for his ninth save. Cedar Rapids' Anthony McIver (0-1) gave up two unearned runs in his two innings pitched to take his first loss of the season.
