For Their Last Game of Their Inaugural Season, The San Francisco Dragons Will Hold a Food Drive in Cooperation With SF Food Bank and The Hamilton Family Center

San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Dragons announced today that at the last game of their inaugural season at historic Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, they will hold the first annual Dragons Care Food Drive in cooperation with San Francisco Food Bank and the Hamilton Family Center.

To encourage more donations, the Dragons are making a special offer; for every non-perishable food item or toiletries item donated, the fan can buy a $10 dollar general admission ticket, a markdown of over 50%.

"We felt that this promotion was a great idea, in more than one way," said Dragons President Chris Bulger, "offering such a discount is a great way to say thank you to the people of San Francisco for a great inaugural season, in addition to contributing to a very worthwhile cause."

The worthwhile cause to which Bulger refers is that of curbing hunger and homelessness in America. Although the USA has the most resources of any country in the world, Americans are not immune to the specter of hunger. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), based on a national U.S. Census Bureau survey of households representative of the U.S. population, reports that in 2004 11.9 percent of all U.S. households were "food insecure" because of a lack of resources.

Organizations such as the San Francisco Food Bank provide to the 150,000 San Franciscans in danger of going hungry.

The San Francisco Food Bank collects donated food from growers, manufacturers and grocers, then distributes it to people in need through food pantries, soup kitchens, child care centers, homeless shelters, senior centers and other human service agencies with meal programs. All in all, the San Francisco Food Bank will distribute 25 million pounds of food this year to hungry people in San Francisco. The San Francisco Food Bank asks that fans donate non-perishable food items.

Another partner in the Dragons Care Food Drive is the Hamilton Family Center. Hamilton Family Center operates in various locations throughout San Francisco, one of which is Hamilton Family Emergency Center, located just blocks from Kezar Stadium, where the Dragons play their home games.

Hamilton Family Center is a San Francisco-based organization focused on returning families to independent living and assisting families and individuals maintain their housing. Hamilton Family Center provides food and shelter, as well as a comprehensive array of support services that allow their clients to return to self-sufficiency.

Hamilton Family Center will have a display in the Fan Zone for the Dragon's August 12th game, with representatives from the organization to educate the fans or answer any questions. Hamilton Family Center requests that fans donate new, unused toiletries (i.e. unopened shampoo or toothpaste) and baby wipes and diapers.
