
Dougherty shuts down Rattlers offense in 16-8 Lizards win

Bud Light MVP Brian Dougherty tied a team-record 28 saves, holding his former team to only eight goals as the Lizards cruised to a 16-8 victory over the Rochester Rattlers in front of 4,207 fans at Mitchel Field. Greg McCavera and AJ Haugen led the Lizards offense with three goals and three assists each, while Tim Goettelmann and Lizards newcomer Chris Massey racked up four goals apiece.
Steve Sombrotto and Jay Jalbert also scored for Long Island. Chris Cercy won 15 of 27 faceoffs against his former team.
Nate Watkins led the Rattlers attack with two goals and an assist, while Gewas Schindler and Chris Schiller each scored two goals. Former Lizard Casey Powell was held scoreless for 57 minutes, as the Lizards built an 8-3 halftime lead.
Nate Watkins scored first for Rochester, five minutes into the game, but the Lizards scored three straight goals to close out the quarter up 3-1. Watkins scored again, and Gewas Schindler followed it up to notch the game at three, but the Lizards again went on a run, scoring five goals in a row to go into the locker rooms up 8-3.
John Fay scored the first goal of the second half, but Long Island again scored three straight. Tim Goettelmann scored the first of this run, the game-winner halfway through the third quarter. Chris Massey followed it up 40 seconds later, and AJ Haugen scored with 32 seconds left in the quarter to put the game away.
The Lizards improve to 2-0, while the Rattlers fall to 1-1. The two teams meet again next Saturday, June 14, at Bishop Kearny Field in Rochester.
