Bakersfield Blitz News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The Rio Grande Valley Dorados (1-2) held the Bakersfield Blitz (1-2) to just eight points in the second half en route to a 40-32 comeback victory at the Rabobank Arena on Friday night.

For the second straight week the Blitz came out with a multiple touchdown lead in the opening quarter. Eric Mahanke and Nathan Munson caught touchdown passes from QB Chad Elliott to make it 14- 0 on their first two drives of the game. Bakersfield has allowed just three total points in three games in the first quarter.

Rio Grande Valley bounced back in the second quarter with 13 straight points. A safety, a touchdown and two point conversion, and a pair of field goals by Eric Houle put the Dorados in business. Bakersfield added a touchdown pass by Jason Thomas to Mahanke and a 49-yard field goal by Dan Burnett at the buzzer to hold the lead, 24-16.

Bakersfield was stymied in the third quarter, being shutout while Rio Grande Valley took the lead. QB Josh Kellett hit Marquis Floyd and Dwight Counter for scores to make it 33-24 heading into the fourth quarter. Kellett pieced together a lengthy drive at the beginning of the fourth quarter, chewing up over five minutes to get their final score of the game - a nine-yard completion to Travis McAlpine to make it 40-24.

Bakersfield added a touchdown pass to Rennard Reynolds with about five minutes left on the clock to bring the Blitz within eight points. An interception by Bakersfield College product Alex Wallace gave the Blitz hope with just a couple minutes left on the clock. Wallace leads the team with three picks. But Thomas was brought down at the four yard line on fourth and goal, and the Dorados took the win.

The Blitz heads out on the road for their next two games. They travel to Central Valley on April 30th and to Bossier-Shreveport on May 7th. Friday night football in Bakersfield continues as the Blitz take on the Tulsa Talons at 7:00 p.m. The first 2,000 fans will get a Blitz Dashboard Memo Pad, courtesy of American General Media.
