Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, NC - If one win is good, two wins were better for the Fayetteville SwampDogs as they swept a doubleheader from the Morehead City Marlins winning game one 6-4, and game two 2-1.
Game one was filled with excitement as Bennett Schiltz (Midland) and Kurt Lipscomb matched wits on the mound.
The Dogs would jump off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, when Jason Blum (Southeast Missouri State) and Michael Bozarth (Saint Louis) would lead off with back-to-back hits against Lipscomb to get things going. Chase Edwards (Mount Olive) delivered with an run-scoring single, then Norm Donkin (Delaware) would manufacture a run with a groundout to second base, and the Dogs led 1-0 after the first half inning.
It would be the third inning when the Marlins would get on the board, scoring three runs against Schiltz, partially owing to a home run by Nick Lombardi, the second dinger Lombardi hit against Schiltz on the season. They would score an additional run in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 4-2.
The score would stick right there until the top of the seventh inning, when the Dogs would comeback in their final at bat against the Marlins for the second straight game. Drew Butler (Campbell) singled off Lipscomb to start the inning, then David LaFleur (LSU Eunice) would walk. Blum sacrificed the runners over, then Bozarth walked to load the bases. It was Edwards then that came through with a game tying double, and the go-ahead run advanced to third. A wild pitch with Donkin at the plate would score Bozarth to give the Dogs the lead, then on the next pitch, Donkin singled to extend the lead to 6-4 and plate Edwards.
Schiltz (4-4) and Hunter Barnett (Mount Olive) would combine to slam the door shut on the Marlins in the ninth to seal the game one victory. Lipscomb (4-1) was the loser, despite pitching a good game until he lost the strikezone in the seventh.
Game two was more of a pitcher's duel, although not in the traditional sense. Jordy Farthing (Mount Olive) got the starting nod for the SwampDogs and lasted only three innings, allowing one run on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.
The SwampDogs would get their only runs of the game in the third inning, when Tyler Thorne allowed a leadoff double to LaFleur, then he advanced to third on a wild pitch and came in to score on a Blum groundout. After that, Bozarth was hit by a pitch, then stole both second and third, before coming in to score on an infield hit by Edwards.
The score would stick right there as Justin White (N.C. Central) and Barnett would combine to shut the door on the Marlins over the final four innings.
White (1-0) got the win for the SwampDogs, while Thorne (2-2) was the loser for the Marlins. Barnett (3, 4) notched two saves on the day.
With the pair of wins Thursday, the SwampDogs (24-26) now hold a two game lead over the Wilmington Sharks (23-29) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Coastal Plain League East Division with four games remaining.
The SwampDogs hit the road Friday to play the Florence RedWolves at 7:05 pm.
