Dogs Split Twin Bill with Tobs

WILSON, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs settled for a split of their doubleheader tonight with the Wilson Tobs, winning the first game 5-2, but dropping the second 10-5 at Historic Fleming Stadium.
In game number one of the twin bill, the SwampDogs got to Tob starting pitcher Jacob Janczak early, scoring in the first inning when leadoff batter Sky Overton (Soph./Furman) doubled to open the game, then scored on a single by Mike Deese (Jr./The Citadel), who was the next batter.
SwampDogs starter Alex Siddle (Jr./Southeast Missouri) briefly surrendered the lead in the bottom of the second inning when a K.J. Bryant single plated Andrew Webster and Chad Frazier.
The 'Dogs would tie the game up in the top of the third, when Overton stole home on a delayed steal with Deese off with the pitch from first base. When the throw went to second, Overton broke for the plate and slid in before the ball could be relayed back.
In the top of the fifth inning, the SwampDogs would regain the lead for good when a single by Austin Upshaw (Fr./Kennesaw State) scored Branden Boggetto (Jr./Southeast Missouri) and Alex Liquori (Jr./Kennesaw State).
Siddle (1-0) would get the win for the Dogs, pitching 5.2 innings of two-run ball, scattering six hits, and striking out four and not issuing a walk. Jacob Shumate (Soph./Francis Marion) and Austin Mason (Jr./The Citadel) came on to finish off the game, with Mason earning his second save of the season.
Game two of the doubleheader did not go as well for the SwampDogs, who dug a hole early that they were not able to climb out of.
Will Bice (Fr./Kennesaw State) got roughed up, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) in 1.0 innings. Nolan Mullen (Soph./Furman), Shumate, and Kent Williams (Jr./Indiana) extinguished the fire, not allowing a run over the final five innings of the game.
The 'Dogs briefly rallied in the top of the sixth inning with two outs, getting back-to-back-to-back singles from Billy Vaughn (Jr./UNC-Pembroke), Bligh Madris (Fr./Colorado Mesa) and Boggetto. Boggetto's base-knock brought Vaughn home to break up the shutout.
In the ninth inning, the SwampDogs bats would finally come alive, with Upshaw would scoring after a D.J. Paone (Fr./Wofford) triple. Paone would score later in the inning on a Vaughn single.
Madris singled into centerfield to plate KiJana Madden (Fr./Spartanburg Methodist), who was earlier hit by a pitch, and Vaughn to make it 10-5. At that point Tobs head coach Brian Gaines had seen enough from Michael Wilson, and brought in Greg Mason. Mason would strike Boggetto out to end the game.
Bice was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year, and Trent Cormier got the win for the Tobs, improving his record to 2-0.
