Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs dropped an exciting extra-inning contest 6-5 to the Edenton Steamers at J.P. Riddle Stadium Sunday evening.

The Steamers jumped off to a 3-0 lead through three innings, but the SwampDogs answered back to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth inning. The three-run outburst against Steamers starting pitcher Zach Prendergast was highlighted by a two-run triple by Austin Upshaw (Fr./Kennesaw State).

Ryan Stamler (Fr./The Citadel) was touched up for two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the 'Dogs would answer back in a big way, when Garrett Gandolfo (Jr./Southeast Missouri) smashed a two-run homer over the right field wall in the eighth inning to even the game at five.

The game remained tied until the top of the 10th inning, when Kodi Whitley (Soph./Mount Olive) surrendered his first run of the season, setting the stage for an exciting finish.

With two outs and Zak Orrison (Jr./Mount Olive) on first base, Upshaw singled to right-centerfield. As the ball was mishandled in the outfield, Orrison scooted around third to try to score the tying run, but Orrison was gunned down at the plate to end the ballgame.

The winning pitcher for the Steamers (18-4) was Dylan Zarosky (2-0), and the loser was Whitley (3-1). Joey Rocchietti recorded his first save of the season.

The SwampDogs (9-10) are back in action at tomorrow night with a double header against the Wilmington Sharks at The Shark Tank in Wilmington. The SwampDogs next home game is Friday, June 26th on Green Night presented by The Re-Store Warehouse. Reserve your tickets now!
