FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The SwampDogs never trailed as they defeated the Petersburg Generals 12-1 on Thursday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

Offensively, things got started in the second inning when Norm Donkin (Delaware) was walked by starting pitcher Colin Bigelow. An errant pickoff attempt from Bigelow went sailing into right field, allowing Donkin to advance all the way to third base. The next batter, David Palenzuela (Miami Dade) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Donkin to come in and score the first run of the game.

The Generals would strike back with an unearned run in the top of the third against SwampDogs starter Will Bacon (LSU Eunice). Bacon walked Tyler Olivet to lead off the inning, then allowed a bunt single to David Martinez. Two batters later, Jeremy Wolf singled to load the bases, and with two outs, Dylan Yankle hit a ground ball to first base, which Lane Paul (Murray State) fielded and thew to Bacon, who stepped on first ahead of Yankle, but was ruled to have been bobbling the ball, and Olivet came in to score.

That would be the only run that Bacon would allow, as he went five innings allowing two hits, just the one unearned run, walking two and striking out eight.

In the third, the Dogs would extend their lead when Michael Bozarth (Saint Louis) singled with one out off of Bigelow, then stole second base. Two batters later Donkin would draw his second wald of the ballgame to place runners at first and second with two outs for Palenzuela, who would deliver a two-run double down the right field line to give the SwampDogs a 3-1 lead.

The SwampDogs would plate two more in the fourth against Bigelow, as Palmer Page (Utah Valley) continued his torrid hitting by scorching a two out double to right field. Jason Blum (Southeast Missouri State) would single him home next. After a wild pitch advanced Blum to second base, he stole third on a pitch where Bozarth walked and the catcher Yankle's throw sailed over the head of Aaron Hatch and into left field, allowing Blum to score and Bozarth to hed to second.

In the fifth inning, Kam Stewart (Frostburg State) would walk with one out against reliever Ryan Gray, then come around to score on an errant pickoff throw, and in the sisth, a walk issued ot Blum would result in a run two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Donkin after Gray walked the bases loaded, and the SwampDogs held an 7-1 lead.

The game would get busted wide open in the seventh as the SwampDogs would plate four against Gray, starting with a leadoff wald to Palenzuela, and then hits by Stewart and Sam Hall (Dixie State). A wild pitch would score Palenzuela and move the other runners up a base. A one out single from Page would bring home Stewart, and Hall would score two batters later on a Bozarth single. Page would eventually score on a wild pitch to make it 11-1.

In the ninth inning against Austin McGhee, Alex Harris (Dayton) would collect a pinch-hit single, then come around to score on a two-out two-base error by Hatch.

Bacon (1-2) earned the win with his work for the SwampDogs, and Colin Bigelow (2-2) was tagged with the loss. Nick Hartman (LSU Eunice) got the save (1) by pitching four innings of hitless ball, striking out six Generals.

The SwampDogs hit the road to take on the Wilmington Sharks at 7:05 pm Friday night.
