Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The balls were flying Thursday night as the Fayetteville SwampDogs got their revenge on the Morehead City Marlins, winning 9-3.
After a slugfest on Monday won by the Marlins 16-8, the wind was blowing out again at Big Rock Stadium, as the Marlins connected on two home runs in the first inning off SwampDogs starter Nick Miceli (Soph./Wesleyan).
Those would be the only two runs allowed on the night by Miceli, as he settled down to get through 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, striking out five and walking six.
Meanwhile, the SwampDogs offense exploded for four runs in the third against John Henry Styles, who would be charged with six runs in three-plus innings of work.
The SwampDogs would hit a pair of home runs on their own; with Sky Overton (Soph./Furman) blasting his first of the year - a three-run shot - in the fourth inning, and Zak Orrison (Jr./Mount Olive) poking a solo shot in the fifth. Orrison's homer was his second of the year. Jimmy Faul (Jr./Louisville) had a pair of hits, to push his hitting streak to seven games, and recorded two hits for the fourth time in five games.
In the top of the eighth, the SwampDogs would add an insurance run when Mitch Roman (Jr./Wright State) grounded a into a fielder's choice, scoring Carson Waln (Soph./Wofford). Waln had a three hit game with two RBIs, while Roman collected two hits and the one RBI on the night.
Ross Gardner (Fr./East Carolina) was stellar in relief of Miceli, being touched up for just one run on Stephen Wallace's second home run of the night in the eighth inning.
For the night, Gardner went 4.2 innings to get the win in relief, improving to 2-0 on the season. Styles got the loss, falling to 0-2.
The SwampDogs (13-17) return home for a July 3rd matchup with the Holly Springs Salamanders at 7:05 pm. The game will be followed by the famous Honoring America Fireworks Tribute presented by Hendrick Chrysler Jeep Fiat, USAA and Disaster One!
