Diesel Win Opener, Break Records

Kearney, Nebraska-The Tri-City Diesel opened the season with a 58-42 victory over the Oklahoma Crude this past Saturday night. The Diesel not only won their first game but they broke three individual and two team records doing it.

Wes Cates, the first year running back from Columbus, OH had a record-breaking performance. Cates carried the ball for a new record of 26 times and had a record breaking 119 yards rushing. Cates tops off the old record of 23 carries in a game and 106 yards rushing in a single game, previously held by Sherman Jones. To add to his resume, Cates also rushed for three touchdowns.

Jason Mitchell, one of the best wide receivers in the NIFL last year, will join Cates in the record books. Mitchell had a total of 141 yards receiving which breaks the old record of 120 yards receiving in a single game. Mitchell also ties the record for most TD receptions in a game with three.

The Diesel also broke some team game high records. In the air, the Diesel averaged 10.45 yards per pass and surpassed the old record of 9.7 yards per pass. The Diesel also broke their yards per play stat of 6.4 yards with a new record of 6.9 yards per play.

With records broken in the first game this looks like it is going to be an exciting season for the Tri-City Diesel. The Diesel are preparing for their home opener against Casper, WY on Friday, March 26th.
