A one-yard "run" by the biggest player on the Diesel team, along with a missed Capitol field goal to tie, spelled the difference Saturday night as the Tri-City Diesel edged past the Lincoln Capitols 44-41. The win squeaks the Diesel closer to the .500 mark for a season record, which now stands at 5-6.
Brett Wetton, a 325-pound, 6' 8" lineman, happened to be in the right place at the right time. Picking up an errant ball that was dropped by a teammate inside the Capitol one-yard line, the UN-K product simply fell the remaining distance for a go-ahead score of 42-41 with just 22 seconds left in the game. Justin Coleman, the Diesel quarterback, found Sherman Jones in the eye of a needle for the two-point conversion, edging the score to 44-41.
Although the Capitols drove the ball into Diesel territory in the waning moments, the Diesel defense held, forcing a try for a tie with a 30-yard field goal. The ball went awry with just under two seconds showing on the clock.
The two teams meet for the second time in Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln for the season's final game on July 5.
