Devil Rays Hit The Books

January 18, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays and Kellogg Community Federal Credit Union proudly announce a joint "Hit The Books" initiative. The "Hit The Books" campaign aims to promote reading throughout Calhoun County schools.

Seven schools, including Bellevue Elementary, LaMora Park Elementary, Mar Lee School, Sonoma Elementary, Union City Elementary, Wattles Park Elementary and Tekonsha Middle School, elected to participate in the program. More than 1,600 youngsters are involved.

Bookmarks will be distributed to all students. Included on the bookmarks is a "scorecard" to keep track of students' reading habits. Whenever a student completes a book, he or she advances one base. When the student touches all four bases, he or she will be rewarded with two tickets to a Devil Rays game in 2006. Additionally, a contest was held amongst the students, wherein each pupil submitted artwork. The contest winner, Derek Klingaman of Tekonsha Middle School will have his work featured prominently on the bookmark and posters promoting the program

Rori Ross, Business Relations Manager at Kellogg Community Federal Credit Union, believes this program is an excellent way for KCFCU to show support of the local schools and youth in the community. "Kellogg Community Federal Credit Union is proud to sponsor the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays' ‘Hit the Books' program," says Ross. "We feel that ‘Hit the Books' is a fun way to promote and encourage reading at a young age, as well as fulfill KCFCU's long term commitment of working with area schools to help educate students."

The Devil Rays' mascot, Doodle, and Kellogg Community Federal Credit Union's mascot, Dollar Dog, will make appearances at participating schools to stress the importance of reading.

Martie Cordaro, Southwest Michigan Devil Rays General Manager, is excited about the venture. "This is yet another program designed by our club to promote reading and learning in a fun way. There is not a better way for school children to be rewarded than with a trip to a ballgame at C. O. Brown Stadium to watch future Major League stars."

It's not too late for more schools to sign up for the program, though the number of bookmarks is limited. Please call the Devil Rays office at (269) 660-2287 to register your school.
