Detroit's Andy Kelly Sets Arena Football Milestone

March 3, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Detroit Fury News Release

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Detroit Fury quarterback Andy Kelly set an Arena Football milestone this past Sunday, becoming the first quarterback in Arena Football League history to throw for over 25,000 yards. Kelly, who only needed 115 yards in Sunday's game, passed the mark in the opening drive of the second half against the Tampa Bay Storm.

Kelly, who already holds the AFL's career passing records for attempts (3,638), completions (2,237), yards (25,182) and touchdowns (486), was brought to Detroit prior to the start of the 2003 season to solidify the Fury's quarterback position. A nine-year veteran in the AFL, Kelly has led his team to the playoffs in the last five years, including last season's expansion Dallas Desperados.

"All the coaches and players are very proud of Andy's accomplishment," said Fury Head Coach Al Luginbill. "We knew bringing Kelly here would bring veteran leadership and experience to the Fury, and he (Kelly) has done a great job leading our offense."

While Kelly has surpassed one AFL mark, he is on pace to set a professional football record. Kelly is only 14 touchdowns away from becoming the first professional quarterback, in any league, to throw for 500 touchdowns in his career. If Kelly were to keep his current pace, he is set to hit the 500 mark on Sunday, March 16 at The Palace of Auburn Hills, when the Fury face off against the New York Dragons.

Kelly and the rest of Fury have a short week to prepare for the Arizona Rattlers. The Fury will be practicing at the following times at the Shelby Soccer City in Utica before heading to Phoenix on Thursday, March 6, 2003:

Tuesday, March 4 - 8:00-9:30 a.m.

Wednesday, March 5 - 8:00-9:15 a.m.

All players and coaches will be available immediately following practice for interviews, but other requests can be made by calling the Fury's Communications Manager, Jason Miller, at (248) 377-8704.

The Fury (3-2) are currently tied for first place in the Eastern Division and head on the road to face the Arizona Rattlers (2-3) on Friday, March 9th. The Fury have five remaining home games, and tickets for the Fury can be purchased by calling (248) 377-0100, and any additional information can be found at www.detroitfury.com.
