Detroit Fury News Release
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -The Detroit Fury of the Arena Football League have signed four players for the upcoming 2004 season - veterans Carl Bond (WR/DB), Curt Lessman (OL/DL) and Gregory Spann (WR/LB). The Fury also signed rookie Corey Alston (OS/WR/LB), a former Western Michigan University standout receiver.
Alston, who spent the last two seasons as a back-up receiver with the New York Jets of the NFL, will be making his AFL debut with the Fury in 2004. During his career at Western Michigan, Alston finished second in career receiving yards (2,456) and touchdowns (25). He also finished tied for fourth , with Minnesota Vikings star Randy Moss, on the MAC's career touchdown list.
Along with Alston, the Fury added depth at the receiver spot with the addition of Bond and Spann. Bond, a three-year AFL veteran from Connecticut, comes to Detroit after stints with the Carolina Cobras and the Buffalo Destroyers. Spann heads to Detroit after two years with the Tampa Bay Storm.
Lessman, a 6-3, 300-pound lineman from Northwest Missouri State, will add a depth to the position of center for the Fury. Lessman spent the 2003 season with Carolina, where he appeared in 11 games, starting in eight of them.
"Both Alston and Spann fit the mold we are looking for in our receiving core this year, big and physical," said Assistant Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Tom Luginbill. "Bond provides great experience at the two-way position, and Lessman gives us depth at the center spot, which is vital to the success of our offensive front. We are pleased to have all four coming to camp this season."
The Fury now have 18 players under contract for the 2004 season and will be bringing a total of 37 in for training camp.
The Fury return for their fourth season of Arena Football League action at The Palace of Auburn Hills this February. Season tickets for the Fury can be purchased by calling (248) 377-0100, and additional information can be found at www.detroitfury.com.
