Virginia Destroyers News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - The United Football League announced that its sixth franchise will be called the Virginia Destroyers and will kickoff the 2011 season at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex under head coach JOE MOGLIA.
The team name was selected from results of a 'Your Town, Your Team, Your Name - You Make the Call' fan poll hosted by The Virginian-Pilot, PilotOnline.com, Radio 102.1 The Game, FanHouse.com and UFL-Football.com.
The military-themed logo features a naval destroyer bursting through a letter V that represents the state of Virginia, while the logo colors match those of the team uniforms that will be worn by the Destroyers during the third UFL season.
"It is a striking logo, a team name that we know is already popular with fans and embodies the region's military presence, said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "In all four markets that have welcomed either new or relocated teams - Hartford, Omaha, Sacramento and now Virginia - we have listened to the fans and included them in our decision making process."
The Destroyers will make their home debut in the state of Virginia in 2011 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, where the current seating capacity will be expanded.
In keeping with a pledge to be Virginia's professional football team, the Destroyers will also explore options to hold mini camp, training camp and team practices in other parts of the Hampton Roads region.
"We are aware that many of our fans will come from cities throughout the state, so will consider taking the team to the fans," said Coach Moglia. "I am excited to put a winning football team on the field at the Sportsplex."
