Columbus Destroyers News Release

COLUMBUS, OH – The Columbus Destroyers of the Arena Football League trimmed their roster to 24 active players today, getting the team down to the league-mandated maximum for the regular season. In doing so, the Destroyers officially began preparations for this Saturday's season opener in Indiana versus the Firebirds.

The Destroyers released nine players, including quarterbacks Matt D'Orazio and Tom Jones; wide receiver/defensive backs Jason Collins-Baker, Phil Taylor and Deforest Hart; wide receiver/linebacker Titcus Pettigrew; and offensive/defensive linemen LaKendrick Jones, Hunter Adams and Demond Gibson.

The Destroyers' 2004 roster includes six returning players from a season ago, including wide receiver/linebacker Cornelius White, wide receiver/defensive back Jarrail Jackson, defensive specialist JoJo Polk and offensive/defensive linemen Alex Houston, Donovan Arp and Richard McCleskey.

The Destroyers' active roster includes 18 newcomers. Headlining the list of newcomers is former Arena Football League Kicker of the Year, Steve Videtich. Joining Videtich for their first season in a Destroyers uniform will be a pair of quarterbacks, John Rayborn and Ryan Vena, both who are vying for the starting job. Tony Locke, the lone former Ohio State Buckeye to make the team, joins Ryan Sloth as additions at the wide receiver/defensive back position. Full back/linebackers Wilmont Perry, Ricky Wood and Kelron Sykes all enter their first season with the Destroyers as does offensive specialist Jamaine "CoCo" Blalock. At defensive specialist, Chris Angel begins his first season in the AFL, while Prentice Taylor returns the Destroyers after a one-year absence. Among other additions to the team are wide receiver/linebackers Sedrick Robinson and Corey Hill, who holds the professional football single-season record for receptions in a season (161). To round out the Destroyers roster for the 2004 season are a quintet of offensive/defensive linemen, including Tony Plantin, Wilky Bazile, Carey Clayton, Kenny Jackson and Marcus McKenzie.

The Destroyers will also have a four-man practice squad, which could consist of players who participated in this year's training camp. However, a player must clear waivers before being signed to the Destroyers' practice squad.

The Columbus Destroyers kick off the 2004 season Saturday, February 7 at Indiana followed by the inaugural home opener Friday, February 13 hosting Carolina. Season tickets are available now starting as low as $72 for eight games. Single-game tickets are also currently on sale.
