Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, OH â The Columbus Destroyers announced today that former af2 Coach of the Year Ron Selesky and former NFL defensive back Vinney Clark have been added to complete Head Coach Chris Spielman's coaching staff for the 2005 season. Selesky will serve as Defensive Coordinator while Clark will coach the team's defensive backs. In addition, Matt Tremblay has been hired as Football Operations Assistant.
"Ron's knowledge of personnel in this league and his knowledge of x's and o's left no question in my mind that he is the right person for the job," said Spielman. "Vinney Clark is an OSU graduate and a former No. 1 pick of the Green Bay Packers who is a high energy guy and truly loves the game of football. He has a reputation as a tremendous teacher and that is exactly what I need out of a coach in the defensive backfield."
Selesky, 38, spent last season as head coach of the AFL's Carolina Cobras after beginning the season as the club's defensive coordinator. In 2003, Seleskey was Head Coach and Director of Football Operations for the Buffalo Destroyers, prior to the team relocating to Columbus this past season.
Prior to joining the Destroyers, Selesky earned af2 Coach of the Year honors in 2002, guiding the Albany Conquest to a regular season mark of 13-3 and a Northeast Division title. Selesky spent the 2001 season on the sidelines for the af2's Louisville Fire. He also served as the director of player personnel and assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Storm from 1997-1999. With the Storm, his teams compiled a 31-11 regular season record and earned a berth in the 1998 ArenaBowl.
Clark, 35, joins the Destroyers coaching staff after two seasons as defensive coordinator for the af2's Cincinnati Swarm. Clark began his coaching career as a defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Destroyers from 2000-2001. In addition to his duties with the Destroyers, Clark currently serves as defensive coordinator for Harmony Community High School in Cincinnati.
Clark was a standout on the football field, starring at The Ohio State University as a defensive back from 1987-1991 before enjoying a successful professional career. Clark was the 19th overall selection in the 1991 NFL Draft, spending three seasons at defensive back for the Green Bay Packers. His seven-year NFL career included stints with the Packers, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Tremblay joins the Destroyers and the Arena Football League after spending the past year as Assistant to the Athletic Director for Football Operations at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. At Hofstra, Tremblay handled all administrative affairs associated with the football program. With the Destroyers Tremblay will serve a dual role, assisting Spielman with day-to-day football operations, while also assisting team President David Paitson with the club's day-to-day business operations.
