Mahoning Valley Thunder News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio. - Despite a 67-49 loss on Saturday, April 28, the Mahoning Valley Thunder remains in the arenafootball2's top 10 in the Coaches Poll for Week 6. The Thunder slipped from sixth place to ninth place following the loss to Manchester. The announcement was made this afternoon by the af2 League Office.
The Thunder (3-1) suffered their first loss of the year at the hand of the Manchester Wolves last week. Entering Week 5, the Thunder was one of five undefeated teams in the af2. Today, there are just three unbeaten teams left with one of them being American Conference East Division foe, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. The Pioneers come to the Valley next week to square off with the Thunder on May 12 on Cortland Banks Field at the Chevrolet Centre.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton remain the league's best team - as voted on by the coaches. The top five is rounded out by Tulsa, Bossier-Shreveport, South Georgia and Arkansas. The Thunder received 249 points in votes, just four shy of claiming eighth place over Boise (252).
Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 16 teams in the league by ranking them one through 16 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 16 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 16th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 16 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
The complete Top 16 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
