Despite Loss, Rattlers Still Atop AFL vPower Rankings
June 24, 2013 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Tampa Bay Storm News Release
CHICAGO - For the eighth consecutive week, the Arizona Rattlers (12-2) remain atop the Arena Football vPower Rankings, as tabulated on AFLFieldPass.com.
The team with the best record in the AFL stumbled in Week 14, falling to the archrival San Jose SaberCats (9-4), 42-72. Having clinched its fifth straight postseason berth two weeks ago, Arizona heads into a bye week looking to get healthy and back on track in Week 16.
The No. 2-ranked Philadelphia Soul (8-5) inched closer to a second consecutive playoff run by knocking off the Iowa Barnstormers (6-8), 54-30 last week. Philadelphia can clinch a postseason berth and the East Division title in Week 15 with a win or a Pittsburgh Power (3-10) loss. The Soul travel to Ohio on Saturday for the final divisional matchup of the year with the Cleveland Gladiators (2-11). Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
The Spokane Shock (10-4) come in at No. 3 once again this week following a dominant 80-41 victory over the Utah Blaze (5-8). Spokane Jack linebacker Terence Moore scored two touchdowns on fumble recoveries in the game. Spokane has a bye in Week 15, but will return to action in Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Storm (7-7).
Despite an impressive 72-42 win over the defending ArenaBowl champions in Week 14, the San Jose SaberCats stand pat at the No. 4 spot in this week's vPower Rankings. San Jose quarterback Russ Michna tossed nine touchdowns in the win, including five to receiver Fred Williams. The pair will look to hook up for a few more scores on Saturday, as the SaberCats travel to Salt Lake City for a matchup with the Utah Blaze. A loss would eliminate Utah from playoff contention. Kickoff is set for 9:00 p.m. ET.
The No. 5-ranked Jacksonville Sharks (9-5) clinched their fourth consecutive playoff berth with a 43-41 win over Cleveland in Week 14. The Sharks will host the Orlando Predators (5-8) in "NET10 Wireless Arena Football Saturday" action on CBS Sports Network this weekend. After starting the season 0-5, the Predators have come away with wins in five of their last eight games. Kickoff from the "Shark Tank" is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
