Desperados Prepare for Former Coordinator and Quarterback

February 17, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release

After suffering their first defeat of the season – 50-47 at the hands of the Orlando Predators -- the Dallas Desperados will travel to Detroit, MI, this weekend to face the Fury on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2:00 p.m. at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The game will televised by NBC Sports with Tom Hammond and Pat Haden calling the action.

Dallas and Detroit met once last year, with the Desperados defeating the Fury 61-54 in Dallas. After jumping to a quick 21-3 first quarter lead, the Desperados saw their lead evaporate to six points before holding on for the seven point victory last July.

Adding intrigue to this week's match-up is the knowledge both teams have of the other. Detroit is led by former Desperados offensive coordinator Tom Luginbill and former Desperados quarterback Andy Kelly. Luginbill left Dallas in September, 2002 to join his father – Detroit head coach Al Luginbill – with the Fury. After deciding to make a change at quarterback, the Desperados traded Kelly – the leader in most AFL career passing lists – to Detroit during the offseason.

The Desperados begin preparations for the Fury on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Texas Stadium. They will continue their work Thursday (Feb. 20) and Friday (Feb. 21) at Texas Stadium before departing for Detroit on Saturday. Coach Avezzano will host his weekly press briefing on Wednesday at Noon in the visitor's locker room at Texas Stadium.

The Desperados do not return to Reunion Arena until March 7 when they host the Colorado Crush. Tickets for the Crush game can be purchased by calling the Desperados ticket office at 972-785-4900, visiting area TicketMaster locations or by visiting the Desperados website at www.dallasdesperados.com.
