Desperados Jones Signs With Browns
July 30, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release
After breaking into the Arena Football League with an impressive rookie season this past spring, Desperados defensive specialist Jermaine Jones has signed with the Cleveland Browns. Jones will now join Cleveland for training camp at the Browns Training Facility in Berea, Oh.
Despite missing the first four games of the season while on Dallas' Reserve/Exempt list, Jones put together a record-setting season in only 12 games to earn selection to the AFL All-Rookie team. In his initial indoor season, he established Desperados team records for tackles in a season (73.5) and passes defensed (18). He also posted a tackle for a loss and intercepted a pass, which he returned 45 yards for a touchdown.
Jones made an immediate impact for the Desperados as he led the team in tackles in his first indoor game, then proceeded to lead or tie for the team lead in tackles in eight of the next 11 games. He also totaled eight tackles-or-more in four games, including a game-high 10 stops against San Jose.
His play in the Desperados secondary helped propel Dallas to a 10-6 record, the Central Division championship and a No. 5 seed in the AFL's Drive to ArenaBowl XVII.
Jones is the third member of the Dallas Desperados to sign with an NFL team this summer, joining QB Jim Kubiak â who is in training camp with the Indianapolis Colts â and WR/DB Will Pettis â who is in camp with the New Orleans Saints.
