Desperados Hold Successful Tryout

The Dallas Desperados held a very successful open tryout today. For the third consecutive year, more than 400 hopeful participants took part in drills at Texas Stadium under the watchful eye of the Desperados coaching staff â Joe Avezzano, Will McClay and Jon Norris. The coaches put the participants through a 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle and broad jump.
The day began early, as 154 potential offensive/defensive linemen and fullback/linebackers went through drills beginning at 8:30 a.m. From this group, the coaches invited back 46 players to a special tryout during the afternoon. At this afternoon workout, the players went through more specific football drills. After the "big guys" finished going through their paces, 255 skill players (wide receivers/defensive backs and quarterbacks) took the field to participate in the three main drills. >From this group, the coaching staff invited back 73 players to participate in the special afternoon workout. After the 119 invitees finished their football specific drills, 29 kickers took the field to demonstrate their leg strength and accuracy. All totaled, 438 Arena Football League hopefuls showed off their athletic abilities on the Texas Stadium field today.
The coaching staff will spend the next several weeks evaluating players from the special tryout, deciding how many participants demonstrated enough talent to be offered a contract by the Desperados. Last spring, the team signed Gladston Taylor from the tryouts, and he spent the season with the Desperados on their practice squad. Two years ago, the club signed three players from their inaugural tryouts, all of whom went to training camp with the team.
The Desperados kick off the 2004 season on Feb. 8 when they host the Carolina Cobras at the American Airlines Center.
