September 3, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release
The Dallas Desperados announced on Friday the hiring of Rich Ingold as offensive coordinator. Ingold replaces Steve Thonn, who became the offensive coordinator for the Georgia Force.
Ingold comes to Dallas after three seasons as the head coach of the Quad City Steamwheelers of af2. While at Quad City's helm, Ingold led his teams to the af2 playoffs two of his three years â they were ineligible in 2002 â with records of 10-6 (2002 and 2004) and 14-2 (2003).
"To bring Rich in as the Desperados offensive coordinator was an opportunity we could not pass up," says Desperados President, CEO and General Manager Jerry Jones, Jr. "Rich's experience as a player, as well as a coach in the Arena Football League, af2 and the traditional outdoor game brings an array of knowledge and experience to the Desperados."
Desperados Head Coach Will McClay said, "Rich has had success on the af2 level, which will easily translate to the Arena Football League. He's been a successful quarterback coach and recruiter, which is important to the development of the game at this level. He will certainly help the development of Scott Dreisbach and will help us bring in quality talent. I've known Rich since 1989 and I look forward to working with him in helping guide the Desperados to a successful 2005 season."
Ingold, no stranger to the Arena Football League, served as the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Gladiators (1990), assistant coach with the Connecticut Coyotes (1995) and the defensive coordinator of the New Jersey Gladiators (2001). As a player, he quarterbacked the Washington Commandos (1987) and the Detroit Drive (1988). He finished the 1987 AFL season 149-of-235 for 1,726 yards, 29 touchdowns and five interceptions, garnering first-team All-AFL honors. In his final AFL season, he led the Drive to the ArenaBowl championship, connecting on 206-of-376 passes for 2,246 yards, 42 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
He began his coaching career in 1986 at his alma mater, Indiana (PA) University, serving as the quarterbacks coach. After one season, he took over the receivers coach position, which he held for the next three seasons (1987-89). He returned to Indiana following the 1990 AFL season and resumed his role as an offensive assistant, coaching the school's quarterbacks and receivers, while taking on the responsibilities of the offensive play caller (1990-1994). For the 1999 and 2000 seasons, he was the offensive coordinator at Duquesne University.
Ingold is a former Division II All-America and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Player of the Year (1985) at Indiana (PA) University. He began his collegiate career at the University of South Carolina, before transferring to Indiana following a coaching change.
The AFL kicks off the 2005 season the weekend of Jan. 29-30. The 2005 season will once again consist of 16 regular season games â eight home games and eight road games â and NBC Sports will continue to televise weekly AFL games. The Arena Football League is finalizing the 2005 schedule and should be releasing that information in the coming weeks.
