Dallas Desperados News Release

The Dallas Desperados will join the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas in celebrating the grand opening of a new Boys & Girls Club center on Monday, February 28 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. in Coppell. Located at the Wellington Place apartments, this new center is part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas' strategic growth initiative – an effort to reach out to youth who lack access to Club services.

"The number of children who need our programs continues to rise in Dallas County," says Boys & Girls Club President/CPO Cynthia Nunn. "With collaborative partners who share our mission, we are able to provide opportunities for children to reach their full potential."

Dallas Desperados players, dancers and mascot Kid Coyote are scheduled to be on hand for the Wellington Place grand opening. As part of the center's "Fitness & Fun... After Homework is Done" initiative, dancers and Kid Coyote will perform and lead an exercise demonstration, while players will participate in a ribbon cutting, address the kids on the importance of making positive life choices and take part in "after school" activities.

The Desperados annually partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas for the Desperados Impact Player Program (DIPP) – a community outreach initiative where Desperados players spend time with youth participating in the Boys & Girls Club after school programs across the Metroplex. Now in its third year, DIPP allows the Desperados players and coaches an opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of children in the Dallas area. The program also provides an opportunity for the players to gain confidence in their ability to interact with the community as professional athletes and role models.

"This is what the Arena Football League is all about," says Desperados Head Coach Will McClay. "The players are active members of the community that supports them. The Impact Player Program gives our team not only an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of area youth, but for those children to make an impact on the lives of our players."

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs is to inspire and empower all youth – with special concern for those from disadvantaged circumstances – to achieve their full potential in a positive, safe and fun environment. The Wellington Place center in Coppell, joins Westlake Village in Mesquite, as the two newest Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas programs. Each are located in affordable housing communities sponsored by independent, non-profit Catholic corporations which share a mission to strengthen families through various programs -- a major component being after school programs for children. Since 1965, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas has offered diverse program activities in five areas: Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, the Arts and Sports, Fitness and Recreation to more than 200,000 children.
