Dallas Desperados News Release
The Dallas Desperados closed their only mini-camp of the offseason Saturday afternoon after six practices with their skill players.
"These six practices allowed us to put in some of our offense and defense with the guys before the lineman got here," says Desperados Head Coach Joe Avezzano. "There's a lot these guys still have to learn, but this was a good opportunity for all our new players to get an opportunity to work in our systems."
With 23 new players on their roster, the Desperados are working not only on teaching their systems but also in developing chemistry.
"It will probably take a while to develop the type of chemistry we had on last year's team," says Desperados quarterback Jim Kubiak. "But I think we've got some talented players out here, and we'll just have spend some time together to develop that chemistry."
The Desperados will take Sunday off before beginning training camp Monday morning. The club will hold two practices on Monday, both of which are scheduled for Texas Stadium (weather permitting). The team's first full workout of the 2004 season will take place from 10:00 a.m. to noon, followed by their second practice from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
To fill the final spot on their roster, the Desperados signed Shevin Smith. Smith is a 5-1, 205 pound defensive specialist who is a three-year NFL veteran. He began his professional career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1998. He spent the 1999 season with the Bucs and the end of the 2000 season with the St. Louis Rams. A native of Miami, Fla., Smith played collegiately at Florida State University.
The Dallas Desperados kick off the 2004 season on Feb. 8 by hosting the Carolina Cobras at the American Airlines Center. Season ticket packages are available by calling the Desperados ticket office at 972-785-4900 or by visiting the Desperados official website at www.dallasdesperados.com.
