Deschatelets Re-Signs with Gulls

June 21, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls and forward Sylvain Deschatelets have agreed to terms for the 2004-05 season, head coach Martin St. Amour announced on Monday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Deschatelets, 24, re-joins the Gulls for his third full season. Last season, he notched a career-high 81 points and 57 assists while playing in all 72 regular season games. His 81 points tied for the team lead with Mark Pederson and was sixth overall in the ECHL. His 57 helpers led San Diego and ranked fifth in the league. Deschatelets also chipped in with 24 goals and set an ECHL season-high with a 23-game point streak, which stretched from Feb. 10 to March 31.

During the last two seasons with San Diego (which included one season in the West Coast Hockey League), Deschatelets has recorded 144 points (47g, 97a) and 297 penalty minutes in 137 games. In 2002-03, his first full season with the Gulls, Deschatelets registered 63 points, 23 goals and a team-high 40 assists.

"I feel great about re-signing and I look forward to playing for the new coaches [Martin and Jaime Black]," Deschatelets said. "Martin has been my assistant coach for the last two years and I've learned a lot from him. He will do a good job and I look forward to seeing him behind the bench coaching me.

"I won't be able to play until October or November because I had surgery on my wrist, but I can't wait to get on the ice."

Deschatelets, who injured his wrist late last season, may miss the first few weeks of the season but is expected to make a full recovery.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound native of Blainville, Quebec began his professional career with the Gulls during the 2000 Taylor Cup Playoffs. Before returning to San Diego in 2002-03, Deschatelets played for the East Coast Hockey League's New Orleans Brass and United Hockey League's Adirondack IceHawks. He's also played a handful of games in the American Hockey League during his four-year career.

The Gulls open their second season in the ECHL Friday, Oct. 22 in Long Beach and open their home schedule Saturday, Oct. 23 against Fresno. Season ticket packages are currently on sale. For pricing and benefits, contact 619-224-GOAL, ext. 7. Individual tickets will go on sale starting Saturday, Sept. 25.
