Dayton Demonz News Release
The Dayton Demonz looked to stay atop the Federal Hockey League standings on Friday night as the Berkshire Battalion came to town. The Demonz hadn't played since a 2-1 overtime setback at Danville last Saturday, but that didn't stop the club from a fast start. Ahmed Mahfouz scored a short-handed goal just 59 seconds into the game. The goal was his 23rd of the year, assisted by Jared Hicks and Peter Cintala. This was the catalyst to a 7-3 Dayton victory.
Midway through the initial period, Mark Rivera skated in from the left of Berkshire's Stephen Messina and blew one over the right shoulder of the befuddled goaltender to give Dayton a 2-0 lead. The lead swelled to three with a little less than eight minutes to go in the period on a goal by Jared Hicks. Berkshire's leading scorer, Michael Dolman, finally got his team on the board with 44 seconds to play in the first. This made the score 3-1 after one period.
The Battalion closed the gap to 3-2 after only 38 seconds of the second on Forward Michael Kaselouskas' goal from inside the left circle. The Demonz quickly got their three goal cushion back, however. First, Rivera scored his second of the night, pushing the lead to 4-2. Then, Mahfouz notched his second of the game seconds later. Suddenly, the lead was 5-2.
Lester Brown added to the scoring when he fooled Messina on the backhand, making it a four goal lead at 6-2. Berkshire's Vladyslav Gavrik got one past Dan McWhinney before the period was over and the teams headed for intermission with Dayton comfortably in front, 6-3.
Rivera went top shelf 9:31 into the third for his hat trick and a 7-3 lead.
