Dayton Demonz News Release
(Dayton, Ohio) The league leading Watertown Wolves visited the Dayton Demonz on Thursday night. This season's point race is a close one as the third place Demonz and first place Wolves are tied with 35 points. Dayton would look to take advantage in the standings with a win and draw closer to first place. Watertown, with only four losses to their record this year, would give the Demonz a hard fought game.
The Demonz would fall to the league leading Watertown Wolves in Thursday night's match up. It was an offensive struggle that eventually was by Watertown in overtime with a score of 5-4. Dayton fought hard and traded goals with the Wolves all game long, but could not find a victory to bring home in the end.
Dayton would show no intimidation in the first period as they pummeled the opposing net minder with a flurry of shots and took control of the puck. The Demonz would fail to take an early advantage from multiple scoring chances in the attacking zone and was denied by Watertown's tough penalty killing unit on an early power play. The Wolves would have a power play opportunity of their own and did not miss their chance to get on the board as Phillip Bronner received a cross crease saucer pass and score deep in slot giving them a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
The Demonz started the second period with increased intensity and generated a quick goal off of the stick of Robert Vanwynsberghe. Cody Dion would regain the lead for the Wolves scoring off a backhand shot that he deposited just over the shoulder of Dayton's goaltender, making the score 2-1 in favor of Watertown. Dayton and Watertown would trade goals as Mark Rivera snuck a puck just over the line for the Demonz and Cory Evelyn would cash in on a rebound opportunity for Watertown scoring down low in the attacking zone and giving the Wolves a 3-2 lead. The offensive battle would continue between these two opponents as Shaun Fisher evened the tilt at 3-3 with a wrist shot that traveled through traffic to beat the Wolves' net minder on a five on four man advantage. Cody Dion would score his second goal of the game by depositing a one-timer top shelf at the end of the period to give the Wolves a 4-3 advantage going into the final period.
Both teams started the final period with heavy offensive pushes as they traded shots on net and time on attack was about even. The Demonz had a power play opportunity and generated a couple of good scoring chances in front of the net, only to be stopped by the number one penalty killing unit in the Federal Hockey League. The Demonz would go on yet another power play and would not be denied this time as Robert Vanwynsberghe scored his second goal of the game, tying the game at 4-4 to send the game into an overtime period.
The Demonz generated a quick scoring chance that was denied by the Wolves' goaltender stacking the pads with a desperation save. The overtime period did not last long as Justin Macdonald came down the ice to shovel a backhand shot into the back of the net to win the game with a score of 5-4 in favor of Watertown.
