FORT MYERS, Fla. - In his Florida State League debut, Jacob DeGrom pitched brilliantly to lift the St. Lucie Mets to a 3-0 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle on Saturday at Hammond Stadium.
DeGrom, recently called up from Low A Savannah, allowed just one hit while striking out eight in seven innings. He pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the first by getting Steve Liddle to fly out to left field. That started a streak of 15 batters in a row that DeGrom would retire.
DeGrom's night ended on a high note when he struck out the side in the seventh.
For the second night in a row, the first two St. Lucie batters of the game reached base and scored which was enough offense to get the win. Alonzo Harris got on base when Andy Leer booted a ball at third and scored on a sac fly from Blake Forsythe. T.J. Rivera, who reached on a single, later scored when Rafeal Fernandez singled off of Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen to give the Mets a 2-0 advantage.
The Mets added an insurance run in the sixth to make it 3-0 when Levi Michael tried to throw home to get Daniel Muno, but Michael's errant throw got away from Josmil Pinto.
The Miracle had a chance to close the gap in the eighth against reliever John Church. Daniel Ortiz and Daniel Santana singled in the frame but were stranded at second and third when Lance Ray grounded out sharply back to Church.
Church pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth to close out the game.
Stuifbergen took a tough loss. He pitched six innings, giving up just one earned run and three hits. Ricky Bowen struck out four and did not allow a run in three innings of relief.
The Miracle (51-65, 23-27) and Mets (74-43, 25-24) conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Join Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald on the broadcast at miraclebaseball.com beginning at 12:45 p.m.
