Defense shines for Stars

April 14, 2013 - Lone Star Football League (LSFL)
New Mexico Stars News Release

The New Mexico Stars traveled to Abilene, TX to take on the Bombers, but fell to 1-3 on the season after losing 55-45.

The highlight of the night on offense goes to Seth Smith as he took a handoff 37 yards for the touchdown midway through the 1st quarter. "All I could think about was getting to the endzone" Smith later said. "Arena football has a smaller field, so making people miss is much harder. It makes a long run like I had last night special because it is so much harder to do on a smaller field." Smith finished with 8 rushes for 56 yards and 2 TDs.

DeMarcus James was the defensive stud in this one as he had several highlight reel tackles that resulted in Bombers WRs visiting fans seats around the arena walls. He capped his night off with a tackle along the wall that resulted in one Bombers player getting up wobbling, and an Abilene fan being pushed back one full row in the seats. "As a DB, my job is to shut down and punish WRs" James told Stars writer James Morris after the game. "If I have to go over the wall to do it, then over the wall I will go!" James led the game with 8 tackles.

"The good news about this loss is I didn't see anything on the field that isn't correctable" said Stars Coach Chris Williams. "We have another bye this week for Brendan Crawford to learn our system, and I have no doubt we will be ready to face San Angelo at home on the 27th."

Joshua Floyd finished the night with 5 catches for 90 yards and 3 TDs, rushed one time for 7 yards and gained 14 yards on 2 kick-off returns; Roland Bruno added 6 catches for 38 yards; on defense Marcus Allen chipped in with 5.5 tackles of his own (4 unassisted and 3 assisted).

The Stars have a bye this week and return home on April 27th to face the San Angelo Bandits, whom they beat 60-42 back on March 16th to open their season. It is Student Appreciation night at the Star Center, so bring your student ID and get 50% off select seats.
