Asheville Altitude News Release

ASHEVILLE, N.C., Feb. 22, 2004 - The Roanoke Dazzle held off a late fourth quarter rally to earn a 108-100 victory against the Asheville Altitude at the Asheville Civic Center Sunday afternoon. Asheville's Kareem Reid, who exploded for a game-high 28 points, 16 in the fourth quarter, ignited the Altitude as they cut a 19 point deficit to seven, but could not get any closer as the Dazzle connected on several clutch baskets and free throws to secure the win.

"Even though we lost, it showed a lot of character for us to come back from such a big deficit and make it a game, "said Kareem Reid.

The game started slowly, with the score tied at 27 at the end of the first quarter but the Dazzle opened it up with a 17-9 run in the second quarter to gain an eight point advantage at 36-44. Terrence Shannon posted 12 points to spark Roanoke in the quarter.

After heading into the locker room 55-49, Roanoke went on a 17-3 tear to begin the third quarter, giving themselves a 21 point lead that Asheville could not overcome. During the run, the already short-handed Asheville was reduced to a seven man roster when Lavor Postell was ejected from the game with 8:43 to go in the third quarter.

Roanoke out-shot Asheville from the field by more than 10 %, connecting on 54.7% of their attempts, while the Altitude shot 43.7% overall. The Dazzle out-rebounded the Altitude as well, grabbing 49 boards to Asheville's 38. Sunday's game marked the second straight contest in which a player on the opposing team pulled down 19 rebounds as Geoff Owens dominated the boards.

The Altitude shot a dismal 63.3% from the charity stripe, connecting on 19-of-30 free throws. In addition, Asheville, who leads the NBDL in assists with an average of 21.3 per game, dished out only 10 in Sunday's effort. They did manage 16 steals including Brandin Knight with six and Kareem Reid and Rusty LaRue each had four.

"We all knew we had to take more shots because of the lack of guys on the court," said Asheville's Brandin Knight. "Coach [Meyer] talked about how we needed to take more shots."

Asheville's Player of the game Antonio Meeking finished the game with a double-double, pouring in 19 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Greg Stevenson added 14 points, three rebounds and two steals while Rusty LaRue and Brandin Knight chipped in 12 points apiece. Kris Lang fell shy of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.

George Williams registered 21 points and eight rebounds to pace the Dazzle while Mikki Moore and Terrence Shannon each tallied 19. Matt Carroll added 15 points coming off the bench for Roanoke and Marque Perry chipped in 13 points and four assists.

Despite the loss the Altitude remains in sole possession of third place in the NBDL as they travel to Columbus to take on the Riverdragons Feb. 27. Roanoke maintains their second place position, hosting the Huntsville Flight in their next outing also on Feb. 27.
