Asheville Altitude News Release
Asheville, N.C., Jan. 19, 2004 - The Roanoke Dazzle outlasted the Asheville Altitude 95-91 in a physical battle at the Asheville Civic Center Monday afternoon. Between the whistles, Roanoke's Josh Asselin managed 27 points, 17 in the second quarter, and five rebounds to lead all scorers. Desmond Penigar led the way for the Altitude with 24 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
A total of 65 personal fouls and two technical fouls were called in the intense match-up, causing 10 players to finish the game with four or more fouls, including three Altitude big men who all fouled out.
"It was a very physical game," said Asheville's Kris Lang, "and it (the game) made it difficult for the ârefs' to call. They just called it like they saw it."
Despite the fact that Roanoke out-shot Asheville by 11.5 percent (58.6%-47.1%), and a 16-6 Dazzle run that spanned the late third through the early fourth quarter, the Altitude remained in the game until the last seconds following a 15-5 run of their own.
After tying the game at 81, the foul trouble caught up with the Altitude as Brandon Kurtz and Antonio Meeking each fouled out with Kris Lang already gone. Free-throws made the difference for the Dazzle whose four more connections from the charity stripe (26-of-43 to Asheville's 22-of-30), equaled their four-point margin of victory.
Player of the Game Rusty LaRue continued his hot shooting, connecting on 5-of-7 of his attempts, including 2-of-3 three-pointers, for 12 points coming off of the bench.
"I've just been feeling good," said Rusty LaRue. "I'm getting open shots, but I rushed my last couple towards the end."
Only two other Asheville players scored in double figures as Gary Williams chipped in 11 points and four rebounds, and Kareem Reid added 10 points and a team-high seven assists off the bench.
The Dazzle experienced unbalanced scoring as well, with only two players aside from Asselin reaching double figures. Mikki Moore posted 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting and six rebounds. Marque Perry registered 11 points and five assists.
Asheville takes the court again Friday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Fayetteville to face the Patriots for the third time in seven days.
