TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (29-26) dropped back to three games behind first place as the Daytona Cubs (31-22) evened the series after racking up 14 hits in a 10-2 win on Saturday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Cubs exploded for rallies in the third and seventh innings to score all of their runs.
LHP Conner Kendrick surrendered six consecutive hits with one out in the third. Dan Vogelbach hit a two-run double to open the scoring. Willson Contreras followed with a home run to left, giving Daytona a 4-0 lead. Kendrick stranded two more runners to end the inning
Kendrick (4-8) allowed four runs on eight hits in three innings, walking one while striking out a pair.
Tampa cut the deficit in half with runs in the fourth and fifth off LHP Rob Zastryzny. Aaron Judge drew a one out walk and scored as Jose Rosario tripled into center. Danny Oh led off the fifth with a walk and later scored on a two-out single by Cito Culver.
Zastryzny (3-6) yielded two runs on three hits in five innings, walking four while striking out four.
Daytona put the game out of reach in the seventh against RHP Kyle Haynes. With runners at first and second, Contreras hit an RBI single into left. Billy Mckinney followed with a run scoring base hit of his own. A walk by Ben Carhar loaded the bases and BijanRademacher cleared them with a triple to the wall in right-center. Rademacher then scored on an errant throw towards third base by cut-off man Jose Rosario, giving the Cubs a 10-2 lead.
RHPs Chris Smith and Philip Walby each tossed two innings of one-hit baseball for Tampa. Smith struck out four and Walby struck out two.
Tampa tied a season-high by drawing 10 walks, with Culver and Oh drawing three apiece.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as RHP Taylor Garrison (0-0, 2.40 ERA) takes the hill for Tampa. RHP Juan Paniagua (1-3, 6.00 ERA) is set to throw for Daytona.
Seniors eat free on Sunday home games with the Tampa Yankees. Fans ages 55 and over receive a coupon for a free scooter dog, small popcorn and a small soda, with the purchase of a $5 reserved ticket. Also, kids ages 14 and under receive free admission.
