Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release

BOTTOM LINE: Special teams and the short game were the main order of the day Saturday as the Daytona Beach Hawgs conducted their first extended full contact workout at Derbyshire Field.

THE HIGHLIGHT ON OFFENSE: Running back Brad Lee energized the practice by busting loose on a 30-yard touchdown run and also scored on a short run. Lee's breakout run enjoyment was short-lived however; Sam Smalls stuffed him at the line of scrimmage on the next play.

"I talked to Brad before practice and he responded by getting his shoulders low, taking the licks and finding the holes,'' said Head Coach Ervin Bryson. "He's doing a fantastic job running the ball."

THE HIGHLIGHT ON DEFENSE: Defensive end John Bowman registered three sacks and pretty much dominated the line of scrimmage.

"The defense as a whole did a good job making adjustments,'' Bryson said. "We have to find a way to get more consistent."

SPECIAL TEAMS: Robert Bailey and Erie Williams handled return duties during Saturday's practice. Former Cleveland Brown Marcus Washington extended a helping hand by volunteering for long snapping duties.

"It's always good when you have a veteran step up for jobs like that,'' Bryson said.

THE QB SITUATION: Mainland's Isaac Hall had the best series when it came to moving the ball, bringing the offense into field goal range on the first series of scrimmage.

"It's still Ike, then Neal [Sharma] and Ty [Lohman],'' Bryson said. "The battle is still on at quarterback. The biggest thing I'm concerned about is the lack of experience in the indoor game."

THE LOCALS: Micah Simmons [Bethune-Cookman] made some good defensive reads and coverage. "What's helping Micah out is that he has NIFL experience [Simmons played with the Evansville Bluecats, now in the UIF last season] and is able to adjust. I'm expecting some good things outof Micah ... I'm hoping he stays consistant and can break the starting line-up."

INJURIES: OL Steve Canidate [dislocated finger] sat out Saturday, while Bailey pulled a groin muscle early and did not return.

NEXT: The Hawgs are off Sunday and return to practice Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Derbyshire.
