Dayton Gems News Release

Derek MacIntyre was outstanding in net and the Dayton Gems played a great game defensively en route to a 3-0 victory over the Fort Wayne Komets at Hara Arena in Dayton.

It was the Gems third win in a row and second over a team they had previously not beaten. The Gems will try to make it three in a row in that category when they face the Port Huron Icehawks on Sunday.

Dayton had a solid game from all players in this contest, taking time and space away from Fort Wayne and limiting any second change opportunities Prior to the game the Gems held a ceremony to retire the number of Moe Benoit who was an original member of the team from 1966 to 1970. Benoit was a fan favorite not only when he played but still is in the community.

It was a defensive minded opening 20 minutes of hockey as the teams combined for 20 shots on goal and no goals. The Gems had two of the three power plays but failed to score.

The Gems opened the scoring in the final seconds of the second period when Nathan Oke scored his first goal of the season on a feed from Matt Auffrey at 19:26. Auffrey spotted Oke going to the net and the defenseman deposited the puck in the top shelf of the Fort Wayne goal.

In the third period, Dayton salted the game away with two goals 28 seconds apart. First it was Jonathan Ornelas with a tip shot from Bryan Nathe and Mike Vaskavou. Derek Parker rounded out the scoring on a deflection from Phil Youngclaus and Tim Hartung.

The Gems were outshot by the Komets 37-33. Dayton was 1-4 on the power play while Fort Wayne was 0-1.
