Dayton Dutch Lions News Release
WEST CARROLLTON, OH ...Spirits were high as the Dayton Dutch Lions (2-4-2) hosted the Sacramento Republic FC (5-3-1). The holiday weekend brought beautiful weather and an enthusiastic crowd to DOC Stadium.
The Dayton Dutch Lions FC started out playing patiently against Sacramento Republic. The Lions had their first real chance at goal in the eleventh minute when Matt Walker brought the ball down the right side and pushed a ball through to the corner as defender Sebastien Thuriere came up from behind. Thuriere ripped a cross, but Aaron Schoenfeld could not get a foot on it. The Sacramento Republic though would not let up and shortly after, their physical style led to a goal by Dakota Collins in the thirteenth minute. The Lions continued to build from the back and apply their one touch passing through the middle. Possession was theirs. Brad Stuver came up big in the thirty eight minute coming out for a sliding save as a Sacramento attacker barreled toward him, shooting hard. The Lions had another chance in the forty first minute, but Sacramento's keeper, Dominik Jakubek grabbed it out of the air. A run by Dayton's Eli Garner in the forty second minute led to a foul in the box by Sacramento's Harrison Delbridge and gave Dayton a penalty kick. Aaron Schoenfeld stepped up and rocketed the ball into the net. The teams went into the half tied.
The second half started with both teams more aggressive offensively and the pace quickened. The Lions Matt Walker worked hard and created some chances early, but it was Sacramento's Octavio Guzman who in the fifty first minute went leaping through the air, caught a ball with his right foot and sent it far side into Dayton's goal. In the bottom of the half, the Lions ramped up their pressure, and the crowd was on the edge of their seats as Dayton tried to put one in the goal. In the eighty fifth minute a foul by Sacramento gave Dayton a chance. A good ball in, bounced around and a shot was taken, but went just high. A cross by Dayton's Garner in the eighty eighth minute to the chest of Joe Broekuizen, dropped beautifully for the Lions, but again the strike went high. Stoppage time found the game fast and furious and increasingly physical as the Lions tried to score the tying goal. A beautiful series of passes and moves led to Dayton's Schoenfeld just missing high again. Despite attacking with ferocity, the Sacramento defense and keeper Jakubek held strong and allowed nothing. The game ended with the Sacramento Republic FC having scored 2 and the Dayton Dutch Lions 1.
The Dayton Dutch Lions FC Men's coach Sid van Druenen had this to say about the game. "Very disappointing result. We did have some good possession and chances at the end when we added some extra forwards but we were unable to get the win. It's important for us to keep believing in what we are doing and it's just a matter of time before we will start getting the wins."
