Dayton Dutch Lions News Release

The Dayton Dutch Lions FC made some history today by beating MLS club Columbus Crew in their home stadium 2-1. After keeping the score at 0-0 for 63 minutes it was the Columbus Crew that got on the board first scoring off a penalty kick that was awarded after a handball in the penalty box. But after switching to a 3-4-3 formation in the last 15 minutes the Lions rewarded by scoring two great goals in 2 minutes time. First Gerrit Bartels scored the equalizer and a minute later he also had the assist on Gibson Bardsley making it 2-1 for the Lions. And opposite to some games before in the season the Lions hold on to the lead.

Coach Ivar van Dinteren always believed they could win the game but actually doing it was still a surprise: "I have to say that the Crew were the better team but again we played very organized and after the 1-0 we took a chance by playing one on one in the back resulting in two great goals. It is one huge celebration right now in the locker room, unbelievable. We have been so close to winning games this year but actually beating the Crew in their home is amazing. My guys deserve it and we will certainly celebrate it tonight and then focus again on Saturday when we play Charleston at home. But that is for tomorrow."

The Lions now face the Chicago Fire in the fourth round next Tuesday in Chicago.
