February 28, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA (February 28, 2012) - The Soul put in a solid day of hard hitting as they suited up in full pads for the first time in 2012. The coaches were excited to finally get things going and the players took advantage of the opportunity to show what they can bring to the team.
The offensive and defensive units engaged in a tough and grinding outing as each searched for the other's weaknesses while still trying to discover their own strengths. The players displayed great effort and energy and look forward to do it all over again tomorrow morning.
Tonight, the Philadelphia Soul will hold a "Meet the Team" event from 6-8 p.m. at Aloft Philadelphia Airport hotel. This event is open to the public and will be the first opportunity to meet the coaches, players, Soulmates, SoulMan, and the Soul Squad.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: DB RAYSHAUN KIZER (5'10, 190, Walsh): Played for Orlando Predators (2010-11), recording 108.0 (100 solo) tackles while playing in every game for Orlando, including its playoff game (2011) . Broke the AFL single-season record for interceptions with 16 in 2011 . Led AFL in interceptions (12) his rookie season in 2010
QUOTE OF THE DAY: "It was a good first day. Anytime you put the pads on you know you'll do a little hitting and banging," said Soul offensive lineman Zipp Duncan. "You knew the d-line was coming off. Overall it was a good day, good tempo. Guys were hitting each other and coming off the ball hard. It was definitely a good, positive first day in pads."
PUT A RING ON IT: The Jacksonville Sharks won it all in 2011 as they took the ArenaBowl XXIV title away from the Arizona Rattlers. It was a close contest, but the Sharks edged the Rattlers 73-70 on a last-second 10-yard touchdown pass. The Soul's Jeff Hughley and Micheaux Robinson were both members of the Sharks last season.
In ArenBowl XXIV, Hughley continued his excellent season on special teams as he returned six kickoffs for 108 yards. Robinson had six tackles, two passes defended, and one interception returned for eight yards. Robinson's interception was the only one of the game and one of three Arizona turnovers.
Hughley and Robinson look to take Philadelphia to ArenaBowl XXV in New Orleans and get fitted for a championship ring in back-to-back seasons.
