Charlotte Sting News Release
Charlotte Sting guard Dawn Staley, who also serves as head coach of the women's basketball team at Temple University, led her team to a 53-48 win over St. Joseph's last night to claim the Atlantic 10 Championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
"Turning the Temple program around means winning a national championship, so this is part of it, now that we have two A-10 Championships." said Staley. "It really doesn't stop here, though this now gives us an opportunity to be on the largest stage in women's basketball."
In just her fourth season as Temple's head coach, Staley was also named the A-10 Coach of the Year after compiling a 21-9 overall record. The honor was announced last Thursday at the A-10 awards banquet prior to the tournament.
Boasting a career coaching record of 71-46 (.607), Staley has averaged over 18 wins per season in her first four years at the helm. She led the Owls to their first-ever A-10 Tournament title in 2002.
A three-time WNBA All-Star, Staley will resume her point guard duties for the Sting later this Spring before competing for Team USA at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Already a two-time Olympic gold medalist, Staley will compete for her third medal in Athens, Greece this August.
Staley and the Charlotte Sting will open their eighth season of WNBA action on Friday, May 21st at the Charlotte Coliseum as they host the four-time WNBA champion Houston Comets. Fans interested in purchasing tickets should call 704-424-WNBA or log on to www.charlottesting.com for more information and a full season schedule.
