Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The Atlanta Silverbacks' season may have ended, but leading scorer Fabian Dawkins continues to score goals. After the Silverbacks season ended, Dawkins returned home to Jamaica to play for Village United, a team in Jamaica's National Premier League and has hit the back of the net five times in two games. Dawkins' skills caught the eye of the Jamaican National Team Coach, Wendell Downswell, and Dawkins got the call to play with the Jamaican national team. The Jamaican National Team has been eliminated from the 2006 World Cup, but the Jamaican Football Federation promised to find the team one international game a month. The friendlies serve as great competition for the Jamaican team and great World Cup preparation for their opponents.
Last Saturday (Oct. 1), Dawkins started for Jamaica when they took on Guatemala in an international friendly in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The "Reggae Boyz"Â beat Guatemala 2-1. Jamaica opened the scoring in the 41st minute from a header off a free kick. Guatemala answered almost immediately, scoring from a penalty kick in the 43rd minute however Jamaica regained the lead in the 70th minute when a 25-yard free kick bent around the keeper and sailed into the net.
Sunday, the Jamaican team continued their friendly football and faced-up against Australia. The Jamaicans looked to avenge their 2-1 loss to Australia two years ago. Unfortunately for Jamaica, the Aussies were in fine form and quickly ended any thoughts of Jamaican payback. Australia put its first goal in the net with less than two minutes gone on the clock. Ninety minutes later, when the referee blew the final whistle, Australia had added four more goals to the score. The Jamaican team had few moments of brilliance in the Aussie-dominated 5-0 loss. Fabian Dawkins saw action in this match when he entered the game for Damion Stewart in the 62nd minute.
