Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the ECHL and affiliate of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, announce the signing forward Darryl Lloyd; per team policy, the terms of the contract will be undisclosed.
Returning for his second year in Kalamazoo and his seventh as a professional, Lloyd stormed onto the K-Wings scene last season by scoring the first goal in the team's ECHL history.
Lloyd's wrister 1:28 into the first period on opening night last October 15th was the first of two tallies that night for the forward in a 4-1 victory over the Reading Royals.
The native of Pickering, Ontario kept demonstrating his offensive prowess all season by recording a personal career-best 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists) and led the team with 157 minutes in penalties. The 20 goals by Lloyd also established a personal career-best.
"He (Lloyd) is a hard-nose player and plays with intensity," said Nick Bootland, director of hockey operations and head coach. "Our (K-Wings) expectations of Darryl have certainly increased by the grit and determination he displayed last season, and we believe he can duplicate those efforts again this year."
Familiar with the ECHL, Lloyd has played four of his previous six seasons in the premiere "AA" hockey league, including three with the Victoria Salmon Kings.
Last season, Lloyd participated in the training camp of the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. Highlights for Lloyd last season included recording his 100th career assist on November 4th against the Toledo Walleye, earning three assists and four points on November 27th against the Cincinnati Cyclones and recording his 200th career point on March 14th against the Wheeling Nailers.
Lloyd's efforts didn't go unnoticed by K-Wings nation, as they named him the K-Wings' Kalsee Credit Union Unsung Hero by a fan vote.
Before turning pro, Lloyd played four seasons of junior hockey, including three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Windsor Spitfires.
The addition of Lloyd gives the K-Wings 11 players signed for the upcoming 2010-11 season, which will commence on the road Friday, October 22nd against the Toledo Walleye. Also signed for next season are forwards Patrick Asselin (as-LYNN), Trent Daavettila (daav-UH-till-uh), Andrew Fournier (four-KNEE-ay), Sam Ftorek (fah-TORE-ick), Kory Karlander, Bryan Jurynec (jer-NiCK) and Anton Kharin (hah-REEN). Also signed for this season are goaltender Ryan Nie (NYE) and defensemen Jon Landry and Ross Rouleau (roo-LOW).
Kalamazoo will open up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, October 23rd versus the defending Kelly Cup champion's, the Cincinnati Cyclones with a 7:30 p.m. face-off at Wings Stadium during the 7th annual Orange Ice game.
