Danville Thwarts Comeback Attempt, Defeating Bombers 2-1

July 1, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release

For the second straight night, the Dubois County Bombers didn't catch any breaks, leading to their 2-1 defeat by the Danville Dans.

Dubois County outhit Danville ten to four and had no errors to Danville's two, but a lack of situational hitting was the key reason for Friday's loss.

Ryan Billo (Univ. of Evansville) got the start for the Bombers, and lasted five innings.

Billo was a bit wild, walking six batters, but he only gave up two runs in his third loss of the season.

The bullpen was great Friday night, as they didn't allow a single hit.

Lefty Jeremy Juliot (Vincennes Univ.) threw three innings in relief, struck out four, and walked two.

Eric Panick (St. Joseph's College) threw a perfect ninth inning, and has yet to allow an earned run this season.

Offensively the Bombers hit the ball very hard, perhaps a sign of better things to come.

DH Kolin Conner (St. Joseph's College) had his second straight multi-hit game, and 2B Nick Stoia (Franklin College) added a pair of singles as well, raising his batting average to .290.

With ten hits, the Bombers should have scored more than one run, but double plays played a huge part in this game.

On three separate occasions Dubois County grounded into double plays, all with at least one man in scoring position.

The Bombers' lone run came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when they nearly came back to send the game into extra innings.

After a couple of singles, catcher Ryan Chesler (Millersville Univ.) stroked an RBI single to right field to bring the deficit to one.

Chesler, who came into the game just 1-for-17, broke out of his slump Friday.

Not only did he drive in the only run of the night, he also tallied another single in the third inning.

After Chesler's single, the Bombers had runners on first and third with a chance to tie the game.

SS Grant Zawadzki (Cleveland State CC) stepped up to the plate with two outs and worked a full count.

Zawadzki got the fastball he was looking for and he hit it as hard as any ball was hit all night...but it just happened to be right at Danville's shortstop to thwart the comeback attempt.

The Bombers will be at home again Saturday night facing off against the Terre Haute Rex at 7:15 pm EDT.

The last time the Rex and Bombers faced, there was no love lost between the two teams as Terre Haute pitchers hit four Bombers with pitches in one inning, leading to the only ejection League Stadium has seen this season.

Saturday night will also be "3rd Base Deadbeat Night," honoring our most passionate group of fans led by their Commissioner, Wayne Porter.

The Deadbeats will be having a drawing for a $50 Gift Certificate to Buffalo Wings & Rings in Jasper!

Don't forget to reserve your 4th of July Bomber tickets by calling 812-683-3700 or stopping by the Bombers' office at League Stadium.

On the 4th, Dubois County will host the Danville Dans and FIREWORKS will follow the game.

Act quickly, so you don't miss out on the action!
