Dans Finish Season, Prepare for Playoffs

August 5, 2014 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Danville Dans News Release

(DANVILLE, IL) - You could describe the Danville Dans 2014 year as a tale of two seasons.

After beginning the 2014 campaign, 1-5, the Dans finished the first half of the year with an 11-3 streak and won the first half of the Prospect League's West Division with a 19-11 record, 1.5 games ahead of the Quincy Gems. That secured the Dans spot in the division Playoff Series which will start Wednesday, August 6 in Quincy.

The Dans saw five of their players selected as starters in the league's mid-season All-Star Game, with five additional reserves picked. The All-Stars are voted on by the league managers, team front offices and media.

But the Dans started the second half of the season like the first, losing six of their first seven. They finished the second half with a 12-18 record.

Part of the change can be attributed to multiple switches in the Dans roster. Danville will enter the league playoffs on Wednesday with just seven players that were available on the opening day roster. They'll also have nine players that have joined the team since July 1.

"This has been a challenging year," said managing partner Jeanie Cooke. "We've had some arm soreness and injuries that sent some players home early. There were a couple that had class or intern commitment, and others who left for personal reasons."

Quincy won the second half of the season with a 5-4 win at Hannibal on Monday night, finishing just ahead of the Terre Haute Rex. The Dans and Gems played 11 games this season, with Quincy taking six. The Gems were 5-2 in games played in Quincy, with the Dans taking three of the four played at Danville Stadium.

This is the second year in a row that the Dans and Gems have faced each other in the West Division Series. Quincy won last year in two games before losing to West Virginia in the Championship Series. "Danville and Quincy have a rich history, going back to the Central Illinois Collegiate League days," Cooke said. "We're looking forward to a great playoff series with the Gems."

Game 1 of the West Division Series will be played at QU Stadium on Wednesday night at 6:35 pm. The series then moves to Danville Stadium for Game 2 Thursday night, August 7, at 6:30 pm. If needed Game 3 will be played in Danville on Friday night, also at 6:30 pm.

The West Division Champion will host the first game of the league's Championship Series on Sunday, August 10, with games August 12 & 13 (if needed) at the East Division winner. Butler and Chillicothe are the teams in the East Division Series.
