Lafayette Aviators News Release
Danville, Illinois- The Lafayette Aviators (7-3) fell at the hands of the Danville Dans (7-5) on Tuesday in Danville 20-5.
The Dans got the better of the Aviators in the first inning. Aided by a Max Jung Goldberg two-run homerun, Danville tallied four runs in the bottom of the first off four hits. Lafayette had a chance to answer back in the second inning with runners on second and third. With two men in scoring position, a strikeout and a pop fly eliminated the scoring opportunity and the Danville lead remained 4-0.
Two more hits in the second inning added another run for the Dans, increasing their lead to 5-0 after two innings. A Richard Sorrenti sac fly in the third increased the home team's lead to 6-0.
In the top of the fourth, Zach Heeke (Central Michigan) knocked a ground ball to first base to bring in Chris Monroe (Illinois Springfield) from third. Tuesday was Heeke's first game of the 2019 summer with Lafayette. He was productive with the Aviators in 2018 and wasted no time in continuing his offensive output. Heeke's RBI groundout made it 6-1.
Danville didn't stop scoring and things got ugly in the fourth inning. Any momentum that the Aviators might've grabbed with Heeke's RBI quickly vanished in the home half of the fourth. The Dans drew six walks, two hit-by-pitches, and recorded three hits to plate 11 runs. The score was 17-1 after four innings.
Lafayette was able to scratch across a few runs in the eighth inning. Zach Heeke singled with the bases loaded for his second RBI of the night. The next two batters Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) and Blake Schmitt (Purdue) were beaned by a pitch and walked respectively to force in two runs. A Zach Schwartzenberger (Toledo) ground ball plated another Aviator to make the score 20-5.
Danville scored eight more runs in the eighth inning, putting the final count at 28-5. Danville scored at least a run in all but one inning they were at the plate.
