Danowski Earns MLL Player of the Week Honors

August 5, 2013 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Charlotte Hounds News Release

Major League Lacrosse today announced its weekly award winners for Week 13 of the 2013 season, naming Charlotte Hounds attack Matt Danowski the Warrior Offensive Player of the Week. The winners are chosen by the league's front office and are based on outstanding in-game achievements. In addition to Danowski's honor, the MLL named the Chesapeake Bayhawks' Jesse Bernhardt Warrior Defensive Player of the Week and Ohio Machine midfielder Logan Schuss Cascade Rookie of the Week.

Danowski on Saturday night led the Hounds to a 14-11 victory over the second-ranked Hamilton Nationals in front of the home crowd at American Legion Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Hounds earned their first trip to the postseason in just their second year of MLL play. Danowski tallied seven points, including a career-high six goals, and posted a .460 shooting percentage en route to Player of the Game accolades. The captain rifled in a two-pointer, part of a six-point first-half effort, to propel the Hounds back from an early 5-1 deficit. The come-from-behind victory marked the third-straight win for the Hounds, a new team record. It also moved the Hounds to 7-6 on the season, marking the first winning record in team history.

A six-year veteran, Danowski appears to be playing the best lacrosse of his MLL career. He currently ranks fourth in the league with 45 points, despite playing two less games than the top three point scorers. The attackman's previous high for points in a season was 2010, during which he posted 47. Danowski in 2013 already has set a new career high for goals in a season, tallying 32 over the course of 11 games.

This is the second time this season that Danowski has been honored by the league with a weekly award. He also earned the title of Warrior Offensive Player of the Week following the Hounds' Week 8 overtime victory against the Bayhawks. In addition to Danowski, the Hounds' Adam Ghitelman was named Warrior Defensive Player of the Week at the conclusion of Week 11 and Mike Sawyer was named Cascade Rookie of the Week following Week 4 action.

The Hounds this weekend travel to Annapolis for a rematch with the Bayhawks that has playoff seeding implications. The teams first met Week 8 in Charlotte, when the Hounds came away with a 16-15 OT victory. The game will begin Saturday, Aug. 10 at 7:00pm ET and be televised in the Charlotte area on WMYT MyTV 12 as well as be available for streaming nationally through ESPN3.com.
