SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio Silver Stars guard Danielle Robinson has been named one of eight recipients for the Today's Top VIII Award, the NCAA announced today.
A 2011 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a degree in sociology, Robinson led the Sooners to back-to-back Women's Final Fours in 2009 and 2010, earning all-tournament team honors in 2010. A five-time All-American, she was named to the Stat Farm Coaches' Association first team in 2010 and earned Associated Press second team honors in 2011. The three-time All-Big 12 first team selection was named to the All-Big 12 Championship Team in 2010 and 2011, garnered Big 12 All-Defensive team honors in each of her four seasons and was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2008. Robinson finished her career as the OU all-time leader in career games started and played. The top scoring guard in program history, Robinson ranked second all-time in assists, steals and free-throw percentage. She was a 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award finalist, a three-time Big 12 All-Academic first team choice and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll eight times. Robinson completed more than 500 hours of community service during her collegiate career with organizations including Meals on Wheels, the Special Olympics and Race for the Cure.
"I'm honored to be selected to receive this award," Robinson said. "It means a lot to me to be recognized not only for what I've done on the court but for time I put in as a student. I truly enjoyed my career at OU and the opportunity to give back to the surrounding community."
Selected sixth overall in the 2011 WNBA Draft, Robinson played in all 37 games for the Silver Stars this season with 12 starts. A unanimous WNBA All-Rookie Team selection, she led all rookies in assists per game (3.9) and notched 14 double-figure scoring performances while averaging 8.2 points per game. The OU alumni capped off the regular season with a franchise rookie record 36 points in the 102-94 overtime victory at Tulsa on Sept. 11, the most points by a WNBA rookie in 2011.
The NCAA Today's Top VIII Award recognizes student-athletes who completed their athletic eligibility during the 2010-11 academic year for their success on the court, in the classroom and in the community. Award recipients will be recognized at the Honors Celebration on Jan. 13 during the NCAA Convention in Indianapolis.
The honorees were selected by the NCAA Honors Committee, which is composed of athletics administrators at member institutions and nationally distinguished citizens who are former student-athletes. Robinson join University of Texas' Sam Acho (football), University of Florida's Kelsey Bruder(softball), University of New Haven's Shannon Gagne (track & field), University of Alabama's Kayla Hoffman (gymnastics), University of Mississippi's Lee Ellis Moore (track & field), Amherst College's Kendra Stern (swimming and diving) and University of Miami's Brittany Viola (swimming and diving) as the 2010-11 Today's Top VIII honorees.
Robinson is the second member of the 2011 Silver Stars to have earned Today's Top VIII honors from the NCAA, following center Ruth Riley's selection in 2001.
