Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

Pensacola, Fla. - Blue Wahoos starting pitching Daniel Wright has earned Southern League Pitcher of the Week honors. The Southern League announced the accomplishment Monday after Wright posted a pair of dominant starts. He is the first Wahoo to earn a weekly honor from the league this season.

The veteran right-hander allowed just two earned runs on only five hits over 13 innings for the week. He earned the win against the Mississippi Braves on 4/16 after giving up just one earned run over 6 innings. His next time out was even better in a no-decision. He surrendered just one hit over seven innings against the Barons. However, the lone hit was a home run for his only blemish on an otherwise stellar line.

Wright, 27, was drafted by the Reds in the 10th round in 2013 out of Arkansas State. He made his Major League debut with Cincinnati on May 24, 2016. He was claimed off waivers by the Angels that September. Wright split the following season between Triple-A and the Angles. He has 14 career Major League appearances spanning 59.1 innings.

Signed as a free agent this offseason, he has anchored a talented young staff for the Blue Wahoos. He is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA over his last three starts. He has 16 strikeouts against just four walks on the season. Wright is expected to start next in the series opener against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Thursday.
